In 1967 the Texas vs. TCU football game exploded in the Longhorn face when track star and football player Bubba Thornton returned a punt 78 yards for a touchdown to beat the Horns 24-17.

Bubba Thornton was the former head coach for the USA Track & Field team for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics.

In 17 seasons, his Texas teams finish in the top 15 at the NCAA Outdoor Championships 13 times, including finishing in the top five four times. He coached the UT team to 19 top 10 NCAA finishes and 12 Big 12 conference titles (six indoor, six outdoor).

On December 14, 2016, Former Men's Track & Field coach Bubba Thornton was inducted into the USTFCCCA Hall of Fame.

Indoors National Championship Richard Duncan is Texas’ first 3 way All-American, scoring 12 of the Longhorns 14 points in its best indoor finish since 1987 (12th). Derek Spears is Texas’ first All-American indoor hurdler.  The Longhorn finished tied for 14th place with Alabama.

Outdoor – 7 Horns attended the  Outdoor championship.  Richard Duncan is the first athlete in modern NCAA history to compete in the long, high, and triple jump at the same championship.  He generated 13 points for Texas.  Derek Spears for the second year in a row scored points for Texas in the 110 – meter hurdles and the 400- meter hurdles.  Texas earned 27 points for a 5th place national finish.

 

1996 SWC indoor- Richard Duncan earned 28 points and he missed the triple crown by ½ inch. Derek Spears had the best indoor hurdles performance in SWC Indoor Championship history. Wayne Guidry won his 3rd SWC pole vault title.  Texas scored 67 points in the field events. – Team was runner-up in the meet.  

1996 SWC outdoor-  Texas won its 5th straight outdoor crown-

Duncan scored 26 points for Texas-    Rory Gilpin won the 100 -meter final. Rory’s victory was the first time Texas won the 100 since Johnny Lam Jones in 1977.

1997- Big 12 indoor -  Leonard Cobb, Aaron Fox, and Jacob Davis win titles as the Horns finished 4th with 80 points. Leonard was an 8 times track and field All American

Behind the performance of its jumpers, Texas wins the first Big 12 outdoor championship. Texas scored 63 of its 130 points jumping. It was the Horn's 6th consecutive conference championship. The first time for a 6 in a row since 1972-1977.  Leonard Cobb won the triple jump, Jacob Davis the pole vault, and Aaron Fox the decathlon.  Ivan Wagner a North Carolina State transfer finished 2nd in the high jump.

NCAA championship- Ivan Wagner wins n the high jump to become Texas 28th NCAA outdoor champion. Texas 2nd place finish was its best showing since 1988.

1998 NCAA outdoor -   Texas tied for 47th place with only 5 points.  Texas mile relay team was the first team to score in the national championship since 1988 . The relay team consisted of Matt Ellis, David Aaron, Terrence Wakefield, and Calvin Williams.

2000- indoor – Mark Boswell – 5 time All-American- captures his 3rd consecutive NCAA championship in the high jump.   He is the first Longhorn in school history to win the NCAA indoor and outdoor national championship.  Texas finished 14th at the NCAA meet.

2000- outdoor-  team finished 14th in the nation. Mark Boswell captured a NCAA – record 4th high jump championship.  Chris Hercules is a 4 time All- American in the triple jump.

2000 Big 12  indoor-  Jacob Davis is the second athlete in Longhorn track history to secure 4 consecutive conference championships winning the pole- vault.

2000 Big 12 outdoor-  Team finished second to Nebraska. Boswell and Hercules win.  The team of Johnson, Armstrong, Williams and ??? win the 400 meter relay.   Lawrence Armstrong scored a team-high of 25 points.

2003 NCAA outdoors Horns tie for  21st with 12 points.  

2003 Big 12 Indoors Horns finish runner-up to Nebraska by ½ point. Rick Halberg is a three-time all-conference performer in the heptathlon.  Ashton Collins wins the 400M. Ashton was only the second Longhorn to win the men’s 400M.  Texas has a Longhorn sweep in the 200 meters.

2003 Big 12 outdoors the Horns win the Conference title. Christian led the way as the high point scorer with 22 points. Horns win the 4 x 100 with a time of 39.28.  The Longhorns led by Kevin Barra added 25 points in the 3,000 steeplechases.  It was Texas 3rd Big 12 and 48th conference title.

 2003 NCAA indoor- Team finished 9th.

2003 NCAA Midwest regionals outdoor-  Horns finish 6th . The 4 x100 relay won first place with Tre Gardner, Nick Johnson, Brendan Christian, and Aaron Collin. Aaron Collins also posted a runner-up finish in the 200M. Cristian was the Big 12 outdoor performer of the year.  Two runners advanced to the national meet- Gardner and Christian.

Trey Hardee Is 1st In Decathlon. As of June 2020, his 8465 points is still the NCAA record.

2004 Indoor track meet – Texas places 4th with 31 points behind Donovan Kilmartin's national championship in the heptathlon.  His 6,136 points were the 5th -best point total by an American in the heptathlon.  The 4th place finish points ever for the Horns at the NCAA indoor meet.  Andra Manson won the national championship in the high jump.  Jermaine Cooper lowered his own school record in the 60- meter hurdles. .  

 

2004  midwest regional -  Texas places 4th at the tournament Brendan Christian and Jermain Cooper win their events.

2004  outdoor national championship – Horns placed 23rd with 13 points. Andra Manson won the high jump.  

 2004- Big 12 outdoor- Horns place 4th  with a strong showing on the last day with 5 first-place finishes.  




2006-8 SCORES AT NATIONALS-Bubba Thornton and 3rd in the Ncaa championship

2006 – NCAA outdoor – Horns finish 3rd scoring 36 points. Robison finished second in the shot put in the national meet finishing his career as the Big 12 three-time shot put and discus champion. High Jumper Manson is a 5 time All-American finishing 2nd in the championship meet.

 2006 – Big 12 outdoor meet.- Horns win the meet- The Horns scored 11 points in the 1500 meters, winning the high jump, shotput, and Decathlon.

 2006 – Big 12 Indoor meet-  Horns win the meet with 127 points. It is the first championship for the Horns in this meet since 1999.

 2006 – NCAA Midwest Regional outdoor meet-  Horns receive 9 NCAA automatic bids in 8 events and win the regional title.  Brian Robison breaks the school record in the shot put and wins the event.  Trey Griffin, Ronald Hill, Jamaal Charles and Quincy Boles win the 4 x 100 relay.  Andra Manson sets a new NCAA Midwest Regional meet record in the high jump.  Leonel Manzano won the 1500 meter event.

 2006 NCAA indoor championship-Horns finished 4th with 35 points. Kilmartin wins the hepththlon title,

2007 – men’s track -  placed 3rd at the indoor national championship . Their highest finish ever.

Big 12 Indoors- 4 Longhorns win individual championships. Horns tied Nebraska for the championship.  UT tied or broke 3 meet records in the distance -medley, high jump, and the mile run.  Andra Manson is the first UT men’s high jumper to win 4 consecutive Big 12 Indoor championships.  Kilmartin wins his 3rd heptathlon .  Manzano broke Big 12 and UT school records in the mile run. Hernandez wins the 800. 

Big 12 outdoors-  Texas finishes third.  Leo Manzano and Derek Randall capture event titles. Manson places second in the high jump.  Jamaal Charles was second in the 100 meters.

  

NCAA outdoors regionals  -   Leo Manzano is only the second 3 time NCAA Regional Champion in history setting a new meet record and helping the team to 5th place.   Derek Rand defends his 2006 discus championship.  5 Horns qualify for the NCAA championship.

 

Highest finish (3rd) in Texas History at the NCAA Indoor meet. Manson and Kilmartin win individual championships with Kilmartin the Co-Indoor Athlete of the Year. Leo Manzano wins his second national title.

NCAA Outdoor national championship-  Horns finish 14th.  Andra Manson, Hamza Deyaf, and Leo Manzano earn All-American honors.  

 

2007 -2008-6 scores at Nationals -Coach Bubba Thornton-

2008 NCAA outdoor -  Texas finishes 3rd.  This tied the Longhorn record for the highest place in program history.  Manzano, Hernandez and Wallace all won national titles, which tied for the most in school history. Hernandez won the 800. It was the first national title in the 800 for Texas.


The 4 x 800 relay broke the school record set in 1981.  All four were Big 12 champs, all-Americans, world record holders, and national champions.  Leo Manzano, Jacob Hernandez, and Alex Anderson.  The men’s team placed third at indoor nationals, and Manzano won the indoor mile.   

 

2007- Leo Manzano broke the school record for the mile at 3.56.98.




Big 12 outdoors -  Texas finishes 3rd  and wins 4 individual titles.-  Kilmartin, Manzano, Hernandez, and Maston Wallace- are all winners. Hernandez's victory in the 800 meters was the first in school history at the Big 12 outdoor championship.

Big 12 Indoors – Texas wins the Big 12  with 4 members winning individual honors-Manzano, Hernandez, Everett, and Miller. It is Texas’s 3rd consecutive title win.   Kyle Miller wins the 1000 meter.

2009- 2 Scores at Nationals-Coach Bubba Thornton-

Coach Thornton said, “ I don’t think we have any weaknesses.”   Jacob Hernandez was the standout performer for the team.  This was the 4th year in a row that the Longhorns won the Big 12 indoor track meet.

Big 12 outdoors-  Texas wins two individual titles and finishes 3rd overall. Tevan Everett and Jake Morse are winners. This is the first time in school history the Longhorns won 4 consecutive Big 12 Indoor championships.

In the NCAA regional meet- Tevan and Jake Morse win. Maston Wallace and Brandon Drenon also earn spots in the national meet.

NCAA indoor championships- Texas finishes 10th. It is their 7th consecutive season in the top 10.  Texas scored 55 of their 115 points in the middle-distance races.   Patrick Todd, Everett, Hernandez,  and Harris all won titles.

2009 – NCAA outdoor championships-  Texas tied for 20th place.  Jacob Hernandez Is The 2008 Outdoor National Champion In The 800 Meter, And the 2009 Indoor National Champion In The 800 Meter. In the NCAA outdoors

Ryan Crouser 1st In Shot Put

During his historic career on the Forty Acres, Crouser was a four-time NCAA shot put champion (2016 Indoor; 2014 Indoor & Outdoor; 2013 Outdoor), a nine-time USTFCCCA First Team All-American, and two-time second-team honoree. Crouser was named the 2014 USTFCCCA Men's National Field Event Athlete of the Year after his national-title sweep and was twice nominated for Big 12 Male Athlete of the Year. Just months after concluding his collegiate career, Crouser won the gold medal in the shot put at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. His 22.52m/73-10.5 effort four-and-a-half years ago set an Olympic record. He still holds both of UT's indoor and outdoor shot put records to this day.
