Ken Ehrig

Kenneth “Kenny” Dale Ehrig, 75, went to be with the Lord on Friday, September 8th at Live Oaks Estates of Austin, surrounded by his family, after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s. He was born January 28th, 1948, in Gonzales, Texas to Helmuth and Alma Breitschopf Ehrig, he was the youngest of three boys.

Kenny was a 1966 graduate of Gonzales High School. He followed his brother, Ronnie Ehrig, playing football for The University of Texas. He was a senior on the Longhorns’ 1969 National Championship football team and earned his degree in business. Kenneth was a senior pharmaceutical representative, awarded as a top salesman, and was a favorite with all the doctors.

He met his wife, Nancy, while she was working for her father, Dr. James M. Graham. They married on September 2, 1978. They raised their children in Austin and have immensely helped their daughter Susan raise her own sons.

Kenny is remembered for his steadfast loyalty, deep love of family, kindness, playful sense of humor, and sweet personality mixed with his German stubbornness. He was always ready to help anyone and tried to put a smile on everyone’s face. He was the kind of neighbor who would stop and chat with anyone, would mow your lawn, and would pump out flooding in everyone’s yards after rains. He was beloved by every dog he met, and he adored and doted on the family’s two sets of twin dachshunds for the last thirty years. Kenny was a wonderful father and Opa, and he loved supporting his children and grandchildren’s activities and interests. Education was very important to him, and he helped in providing many opportunities for them. He especially loved continuing faith, heritage and athletic traditions with his family. Kenny was a member of Hermann Sons, T Association, and the First United Methodist Church.

Kenny was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, David Lee Ehrig and Ronald Louis Ehrig.

Kenny is survived by his wife of 45 years, Nancy Graham Ehrig of Austin; sons Kenneth Jason Ehrig and wife Desiree of Marble Falls; Kevin Graham Ehrig and wife Nickie of Kyle; daughter Susan Denise Ehrig Thonhoff of Austin; 8 grandchildren, Emily Day Ehrig, Luke Helmuth Ehrig, Charlee Grace Ehrig and Heidi Adelle Ehrig; Roland Helmuth Thonhoff and Raimund Hugo Thonhoff; Tilda James Ehrig and Grayson Jacob Ehrig. Sister-in-law, Glenda Griffith Ehrig; of Durango, CO, nephews Gregory David Ehrig and Ryan Austin H. Ehrig of Durango, CO, Daniel Paul Ehrig of Albuquerque, NM, aunt Gertrude Ehrig Iley of Gonzales, and many dearly loved cousins.

A visitation will take place on Friday, September 22, 2023, at Seydler – Funeral Home in Gonzales, Texas from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2023, at First United Methodist Church in Gonzales, Texas at 10:00am. Services will be conducted by Rev Dr. Matt J. Pennington.

Having been a teammate, I can tell you he was a great athlete. With that being said, and as good as he was, I can tell you he was a  fine individual. He lived in Austin in the basement of Moore Hill Hall, 3 doors down from me. I am not capable of putting into words how great a person he was. I love the guy. Condolences to his beautiful wife, Nancy, and the family. What a GREAT guy!!!!!      DAVID KRYSTINIK

I’m trying to do something for him soon...I’m looking for a classic car so that I can drive him around for an hour or so. I’d be happy to pay for the use of it. If you know anyone who has one, I’d love to talk to them. He always wanted a baby blue Vette. He lives in Austin. Thanks again. Jason Ehrig

For those of you who may not already know, Kenneth Ehrig is in the last stages of Alzheimer’s and is now in a residential nursing home.  He is no longer able to walk or speak well.  His wife, Nancy reached out to the T-Association to express her thanks to all who were a part of UT Football and those they saw at the 2019 50th year reunion.  In her words:

Billy, I’m sorry to hear of Ken’s passing.  He was our Robins Pharmaceutical Company representative at the UT Health Center…one of our favorite reps.   We were good friends and graduated the same year.  All the staff really liked him.  He was a great person and a great member of the Longhorn football team. We both loved dachshunds.   I didn’t realize he had developed Alzheimer's.    It’s a terrible disease.

I’m glad that TSLN is keeping up with his legacy.

Thank you for letting us know about him.  I’ll pass this on to the other UT Health Center pharmacists who knew him.

Best wishes,

Bennett

“This was the last really great event that he was able to attend.  It stayed with him for many days.  After that weekend, Kenny would get up almost every day for the next 2 weeks and say “we have to get over to the football game!”.  That was very special!!
